Making your business more accessible doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. Here are 10 things you can start doing right now.
The top 10 things
- Alt text: Add alternative text to the images on your website and social media so that blind people can access them.
- Captions: add captions to the videos on your website and social media. Tools that I captions generally create searchable transcripts as well.
- Buttons and links: label the buttons and links on your website so that they can be identified by screen reader users. Avoid labels such as “click here.”
- Accessibility Statement: Create an accessibility statement for your website and provide a method for customers to report issues. If you are actively working to improve accessibility, say so in the statement.
- Job postings: Audit your job postings for language or requirements that would discourage qualified disabled candidates from applying. Is a drivers license really required?
- Focus groups: Conduct a focus group with your employees seeking ideas as to how the business can be more accessible from their point of view.
- Odors: Establish a perfume/Scent-free environment in common areas. Encourage employees to keep their use of perfume to a minimum and avoid scented candles or incents.
- Sound: Make sure that the acoustics and music in your facility are not intrusive. Keep the volume of music low, and minimize echo by using curtains, rugs and other noise suppressors.
- Barriers: Identify and move items that block pathways.
- Item location: Ensure that items are easily within reach and located in a logical place.
